Chapter naming

Chapter 1 - Introduction

There are two reasons why I named Chapter 1 Introduction.

Reason 1:
"Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself." (Pg 11). This quote introduces one of the main themes in the novel - Fear. One example of fear at work in the novel is Boo Radley, who has been portrayed by the Maycomb community as a monster. Everything that happens in the town is blamed on him, even though there was evidence that it was not related to him, the people of Maycomb were "unwilling to discard their initial suspicions" (Pg 15).

Reason 2:
"The sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes" (Pg 17) shows the racial prejudice that people had against Negroes, racial prejudice is also one of the themes in the novel. This is evident when Tom Robinson was found guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, something which he did not do.
